Meet Violet Moyo, one of the wonderful Registered Nurses at Rocky Bay.

Violet has been a Registered Nurse for over 18 years working in different medical settings, and has been with Rocky Bay for over seven years.

Her busy role sees her supporting customers, supporting Team Leaders and other support staff who work closely with customers and liaising with doctors and pharmacists, amongst other important tasks.

Earlier this year, Violet was a recipient of a Rocky Bay Loyalty Award for her seven years of dedicated service to the organisation, and is part of an integral team who support customers around the clock.

Describe a typical day as a Registered Nurse at Rocky Bay?

My day starts with getting a hand over from the previous Registered Nurse, checking the diary and ensuring customers’ clinical appointments for the day are met. I liaise with Team Leaders and support staff on the floor on any matters of importance and any changes to look out for so I can manage them further.

I interact with customers to support them to achieve their goals. I provide them with any medication needed, change dressings, manage enteral feeds (nutrition taken through the mouth or through a tube that goes directly to the stomach), attend to any clinical needs as they arise, and liaise with doctors to ensure their orders are implemented. I also make pathology bookings, manage pharmacy orders and book referrals and follow up appointments.

We also update our customers’ families and guardians of any medical changes, new requirements or treatments. At the end of a shift, I report and hand over to the rest of nursing team, Clinical Nurse Manager, and Allied Health teams.

Tell us more about your experience in the field of nursing?

I have worked as a general nurse and midwife, and I have experience working in rural out-reach program conducting antenatal care and Maternal and Child Health clinics, that included immunisation programs for children under five.

While out on one of these trips, I had the privilege of assisting in a successful delivery of triplets, two of which were in breech presentation while one had its umbilical cord around the neck. The experience was quite rewarding and all babies were in good health.

I have also attended to patients with physical trauma resulting from road traffic accidents and violence, as well as victims of war. I have worked in an ophthalmic hospital, a cancer unit, in mental health, and general acute care and domiciliary pathology.

What do you love most about your role?

I love the feeling of satisfaction in nurturing others, building a rapport with customers and supporting our Clinical Nurse Manager and my team members.

What do you love to do in your free time?

I love spending time with family, gardening (although I’m all thumbs at it), listening to music, reading, watching documentaries, trying out new recipes, taking nature walks and listening to the sound of waves from the ocean.

What are three things you can’t live without and why?

  1. My family – they give me a sense of accomplishment, belonging, love and security
  2. Music – it’s calming and uplifting
  3. My friends
