Supported by his team at Rocky Bay’s Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home in Girrawheen, Shaun swapped his daily routine for a three-day adventure in Busselton, packed with sightseeing, sweet treats and a taste of the South West’s natural beauty.

Behind the scenes, the trip required thoughtful planning. From accessible accommodation and transport, to ensuring equipment like a hoist was delivered on site, Rocky Bay support workers Rebecca and Chloe made sure everything Shaun needed was ready and waiting.

“Shaun had been talking about going on a holiday for a while,” Rebecca said. “Once we had the right place sorted, we showed him photos and he was instantly excited, he couldn’t stop smiling.”

The story continues...

Once in Busselton, Shaun embraced the coastal charm, kicking off his break with a scenic foreshore walk and a visit to Mammoth Cave in Margaret River, one of the few wheelchair-accessible caves in the region. But it wasn’t just sightseeing that made this trip memorable.

A stop at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory became a standout moment. Shaun, who had one special mission in mind of picking out the perfect gift for his mum, delighted in choosing chocolates and soaking up the buzz of the venue’s beautiful gardens.

Despite the South West’s winter drizzle, Shaun didn’t miss a beat. He explored local markets, mingled with stallholders and wrapped up his trip with a relaxing visit to a nearby playground.

How we helped

When Shaun set his sights on a beachside getaway, his support team made it happen, proving that with the right support, holidays aren’t just a luxury, they are a milestone in independence and inclusion.

“Shaun had the best time. It was amazing to see him tick off a personal goal and experience something so different from his every day,” Chloe said. “Seeing his excitement from start to finish reminded us why these moments matter.”

At Rocky Bay, supporting customers to set goals, and achieve them, is at the heart of what we do. Shaun’s Busselton escape was more than just a holiday. It was a celebration of freedom, connection, a great example of what is possible with the right support in place.
