To assist, we’ve developed a few FAQs designed to help answer the questions you have about the NDIS, how it will affect you and the type of help available to you throughout your transition to the NDIS.

Frequently Ask Questions – NDIS

The NDIS provides Australians who live with a disability with reasonable and necessary funding to support them to participate in all areas of life. It is different to the previous system of providing block funding to agencies and community organisations in Western Australia, as it provides direct funding to individuals so that they have choice and control of their own supports.

 

As a registered provider through the NDIS, Rocky Bay is able to offer people living with disability a large range of supports that are funded in an NDIS plan.

The NDIS will work with you to develop a plan that is right for your circumstance and reasonable and necessary funding will then be provided to support you to achieve your particular goals.

 

An Eligibility Checklist is available on the NDIS website, which can help determine if you are eligible to apply for the NDIS by asking a few simple questions. The questions are just a guide, and the final decision about eligibility is up to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

 

To be eligible for the NDIS you must:

 

  • Be aged under 65 years
  • Be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa
  • Usually need support from another person because of permanent and significant disability
  • Use special equipment because of a permanent or significant disability
  • Need some supports now in order to reduce future needs

 

If you are eligible to become a participant, you can ask to make an Access Request by contacting the NDIA. The NDIA will make decisions about which supports would be reasonable and necessary for you.

Your goals are the basis of your NDIS Plan, so it is important to consider what supports you need to reach your goals to make sure you receive funding for reasonable and necessary support and services. You will be allocated a budget and will have choice and control over how that funding is spent in close collaboration with your provider. You are in control and you have flexibility to make your plan work for you.

No. The Disability Support Pension is completely separate to the NDIS.

Supports available under the NDIS include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Assistance with daily living activities and everyday needs
  • Participation in social and community activities
  • Household cleaning or yard maintenance
  • Transport to help individuals participate in the community
  • Assistive Technology, such as mobility equipment or home or vehicle modifications
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation
  • Therapy
  • Support Coordination
  • Employment-related support

Support Coordination is a support that helps you to understand and put in place funded supports in your NDIS Plan and links you to broader support, such as other government and community services.

 

Support Coordinators will support you to build on your skills, connect you with services providers and help to negotiate with providers about the supports and services they offer and how much funding will be needed.

 

They will also make sure that service agreements and bookings are completed, help you build on your ability to make choices and have control, coordinate your own supports, and help in planning ahead to prepare for your plan review.

Planning meetings can be done in person or over the phone and are the best way for the NDIA to gather all the information needed to develop the best plan for you. You can bring along anyone you choose to the meeting, whether it is your carer, guardian, a family member or a friend.

 

The NDIS planning meeting is conducted by either an NDIS planner or a Local Area Coordinator. The planning meeting is a chance for you to discuss your goals - a very important part of your NDIS plan. Your goals may include being able to use public transport independently, find, keep or change jobs, or a goal to help build life skills to become more independent.

The Federal Government has said no Australian living with disability will be worse off under the NDIS.

It is important for individuals to prepare early to make sure that nothing is missed in their NDIS Plan, and use the planning meeting to discuss their plan with their planner to make the most of it.
