For the past four weeks, Michael has been serving smiles, coffee and conversation at Moon Café, and the experience has left a lasting impression on him, the people he worked with and the café’s customers.
From his very first day, Michael’s excitement was mixed with nerves. “I had been to Moon Café before, but I was still nervous. It was good to have house staff around in case I needed extra support, and that helped me feel relaxed,” he said. By his last day, the nerves had been replaced with confidence. “I was excited and felt more confident. The four weeks went by really fast.”

Before starting, Michael completed a barista course, and he couldn’t wait to put his new skills into practice. “I enjoyed being on the till and taking orders from customers. I was really good at making my own coffee, and I loved using the button press and money skills.”
He also picked up some new tricks in the kitchen, learning how to cut tomatoes more easily, prepare toasties, slice chicken and put platters together. Each day brought a fresh opportunity to learn.
Michael’s style quickly became clear, it was socialising. “Getting to meet new people and chat with them was my favourite part,” he said. Remembering customers’ orders gave him a boost of confidence and showed just how much he was thriving in the busy café environment.
Working alongside Ash, the café manager, was another highlight. “Working with Ash was fun. We were able to laugh but also work. Ash works alone, so I think she enjoyed having an extra pair of hands.”

The placement has given Michael a clear vision for the future. “My dream job is to work at a café where I can have fun and be accepted for who I am. I’d love to serve lots of yummy food, and I’d like to try being a waiter too.”
His advice to others considering work experience? “Go for it! Set your goals and push hard to achieve them. Talk to your team leader, embrace it, enjoy it and don’t be afraid.”
Michael’s time at the Moon Café may have been just four weeks, but the confidence, skills and joy he gained will last far longer.
