Assistive Technology and independence in the home
Whether you are young or old, if you have difficulties with movement, or a medical/health condition that affects your ability to carry out regular activities, it is likely that you rely on other people to undertake some of your day to day tasks.
Did you know that new technology devices are emerging every week that could enable you to independently carry out the tasks that you currently need help with? Not only can they give you independence, but an improved quality of life.
The latest technology can make independent living and everyday tasks so much easier, even if you have limited mobility. There are so many potential solutions that it may be difficult to know where to start and harder still to find something that fully suits your individual needs; this is where Assistive Technology can help you.
We can assist you to find the right technology, whether you are looking for something simple such as tap turners or jar openers, or devices to help you to control lighting, heating, security, computers, games and electrical appliances.
Our Assistive Technology program employs qualified professionals who have extensive experience in matching individual needs with the right technology solutions.
With more control over your own environment you will be amazed at what you can achieve!
Assessing your needs
Before we can prescribe or recommend appropriate technology devices, we need to understand your individual needs and preferences, and the goals that you want to achieve. This may involve a telephone conversation or face to face discussion or more detailed assessments such as physical checks to look at your current abilities, taking measurements such as joint ranges, and looking at the environments in which you might use the equipment/technology.
Assessments are conducted by qualified and experienced therapists. They can be carried out in our Assistive Technology clinic rooms or in your home, school or workplace as required.
Finding your solutions
Not only can we assist you to explore new technology, we can also support you with setting up and configuring technology specific to your needs and look at ways to integrate it with other equipment in your home.
If your needs change, we can provide ongoing support to ensure that your technology continues to work for you. Training can be provided for yourself and others who may support you and we will work with your therapist, support worker or family to help you achieve your goals.

It seems that each day there is a new tablet or smart phone application (app) released to provide you with useful information or make every day living easier. These can benefit everyone but are particularly helpful if you have movement difficulties or visual/hearing loss.
