Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

For individuals who have complex communication needs,  Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) options may be available to enhance communication. If you experience little to no speech, reduced intelligibility and have difficulty understanding what other people say, then our Speech Pathologists can assist you.  They will identify your needs and provide you with a plan to support your goals.  AAC is a total communication approach which might mean using unaided systems such as Key Word Sign or aided systems such as voice output devices to optimise your communication.

PODD Books

One form of AAC to enhance communication is the dynamic display communication (PODD) book. A Speech Pathologist will determine your suitability for a PODD book and will work with you to choose:

  • which vocabulary you would like in the book
  • how many and what type of symbols to display
  • the best way you can access the book

They will then work with you and your key communication partners to ensure you get the most out of it.
