Our life in movies – Ryan and Martin’s story

Update – 20th August 2013

Ryan attended the short film awards at Fox studios in Sydney but unfortunately their film didn’t make the finals or win the category.  Ryan mentioned the memorable experience of attending, meeting other film entrants and meeting Paula Duncan.  Ryan is looking forward to working with Martin on more video productions and both will enter more videos into future competitions.

Original story:

“In the next 12 months, I’m keen to meet more people and grow my new video production business” Ryan stated back in 2012 and now in August 2013, these two goals have well and truly been met.

Ryan Brewer (left) is a 26 year old Rocky Bay client living with Duchene muscular dystrophy (DMD).  Ryan uses an electric wheelchair, obtained through Rocky Bay, to get out and about and fulfil his passions in video production and editing as well as his hobby of custom building remote controlled cars in the back shed.

For three months early in 2013, Ryan worked alongside newfound friend, Martin Stevens, a 21 year old living with cerebral palsy to complete a short film for Focus on Ability.   Together, they pooled resources to create an action packed three-minute short film about Ryan’s love of fast, large-scale off-road remote control cars.

The project came about while the two worked together on small scale projects before Martin suggested they create a project at the next level.  They saw this as a great opportunity to challenge themselves, showcase their skills and win a prestigious short film award that never seemed possible one year ago.

“With both Martin and I living with a physical disability, we’ve found that by working together, we get to enjoy the team effort, but also work to our abilities achieving each task.” explained Ryan.

Over the three months, Martin filmed and directed most of the film with Ryan producing and editing.  Ryan is now heading to Sydney to attend the short film awards night at Fox Studios on Thursday, 15th August 2013 on behalf of the team.

Their film is in category ‘Open Documentary’ and they will find out if their film makes it to the finals mid-August 2013 and hopes to take out first place to take the prize, a Sugarlove masterclass & Sony SLTA57S twin lens kit camera.

Martin and Ryan now have a few more projects planned and both are looking forward to working together again – you can stay updated at both their websites:
