Getabout taught me about myself – James’ story

My name is James, I’m 21 years old and I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I joined the Getabout Program after graduating from high school back in 2009.
Joining Getabout has allowed me to go out into the community to visit different places and do new things. This is how I first became interested in Photography, which has now become my main interest and hobby.

In the beginning I just started taking my standard digital camera with me to the different places I visited with Getabout such as museums and events like car shows but pretty soon I realized that Photography was something I really enjoyed and something I wanted to keep doing. Now a few years on I have purchased a more professional camera and equipment and have learned many new Photography skills mainly just by teaching myself through trial and error while going out to take photos and also from reading many online tutorials and Photography books. I have now started up my own webpage and regularly enter Photography competitions. I also continue to go to many different places and events around Perth to do Photography.

Unfortunately due to having Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy it is getting harder for me to take photos and as my condition deteriorates I am slowly losing the ability to move my arms and hands, which is making it harder for me to move my camera into position to take photos. However this has not stopped me and I recently visited the Dreamfit Foundation were they helped me come up with some pretty cool equipment which mounts to my electric wheelchair to help me move my camera. The equipment includes an electric pan and tilt system which moves my camera up, down, left and right and a second electric system to zoom and focus the camera which is all remote control operated. This will help me further down the track when I no longer have the ability to move my arms and hands.

Thanks to the Getabout program I was able to discover my talent for Photography and I have been able to go out with a carer to many new and interesting places to do Photography. As I mentioned earlier I have created my own website so please feel free to check it out and have a look at some of my photos.
