Starting the journey to independence
After 11 year old Adrian was teased at school for still riding with training wheels, his mum asked his Occupational Therapist if Rocky Bay ran any bike riding classes to help him gain the confidence he needed.
As part of the Therapy and Professional Services suite of services, Rocky Bay hold two school holiday bike riding classes a year. Adrian, who lives with autism, attended the 3-day class at the picturesque Bibra Lake Wetlands.
Adrian’s Mum, Amanda, said “He loved learning about road safety and traffic light signals as well as practicing his riding in a supported environment with therapists and family. It really boosted his confidence.”
“With two younger children,” she explained “it is hard to spend the time needed to build up Adrian’s confidence.”
Amanda added “The bike riding group was great because I saw how other children learnt to ride, so it reassured me that my son will too one day… the journey may just take a little longer. I also got some useful tips from the other parents, such as removing pedals and training wheels to let Adrian scoot around – so the group was helpful for me too.”
