An acquired disability can dramatically affect your life but as Genevieve’s story shows, it doesn’t have to mean giving up on your work, hobbies or sense of adventure.
Genevieve was 28 years old when she experienced a cerebral aneurysm. Two years later she contacted Rocky Bay Employment Services who helped her to find an administration position at Culshaw Miller Lawyers. That was nine years ago and she is still there, an invaluable member of the team who inspires everyone around her.
As well as succeeding in her employment, Genevieve has also had great success pursuing her interests. She took up sailing with Sailability WA at Royal Perth Yacht Club in 2005. Since then, she has won many awards, titles and accolades, including:
- Gold medal – Oceanbridge Sail Auckland – a World Championship event, competing against Olympian and Paralympian sailors
- 2013 Sailor of the Year with a Disability WA
- 2013 Australian of the year nomination
- 1st – Mobility Cup, Canada
- 1st – State Access Class 303, Perth
- World Access Class Championships, UK – contender
With her own determination and enthusiasm, along with ongoing support from Rocky Bay Employment Services and Sailability WA, Genevieve has been able to lead a full life both professionally and personally.
Genevieve encourages others to do the same by inviting anyone who may be interested in sailing recreationally or competitively to contact Sailability at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. All boats are equipped with hoists and participants can take carers along too. Visit www.sailabilitywa.com.au for more information.
