David has been volunteering at the newsagents in Winthrop Village every Tuesday for 18 months in 2012-2013. While there, he completes tasks such as vacuuming, cleaning, and tidying the shelves.
Unfortunately for David, the business has been sold and the new owners start soon.
David’s contribution to the store and the relationships that have formed is highlighted by the comments his support worker received in an email from the current owner, Tim.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed having yourself and young David come to my shop, it’s been great developing a friendship with you both and also it’s been so rewarding to watch and see the growth and development of David. It’s not hard to become very attached to David, the more I have come to know him I have seen that he has a great personality and a quirky sense of humour. He’s willing and keen to undertake the task of vacuuming and dusting.”
David and his support worker have been a credit to themselves and great ambassadors for both Rocky Bay and the Getabout Community Inclusion Program.
Tim continues, “I have learnt so much more about people with disabilities and the great work that Rocky Bay provides. I would strongly recommend to any business owner that has the opportunity to experience what I have…. to embrace the opportunity as it is very enriching”.
