Erin attends the Getabout program on most days at Rocky Bay. She has a love for animals and is always fussing over her pet cat. Erin’s support worker discovered the Animal Protection Society in Southern River, where Erin now volunteers each Wednesday.
“I realised how much joy she got from being around animals, when I researched animal volunteering opportunities, the Animal Protection Society were flexible, accommodating and very friendly.”
Erin is well known by all the staff at the shelter and is given responsibilities which she enthusiastically completes. The dogs and cats are familiar with her and together with her support worker they feed the animals, take the dogs for walks and brush their coats.
One of the staff members at the shelter said “It is a great contribution that Erin makes to the dogs lives. This is important as it keeps the animals socialised ready for their new homes”.
Rocky Bay’s Getabout, alternative to employment (ATE) programme finds volunteering opportunities as well as a range of learning and leisure activities to cater to individual needs while participating in the community and making new friends.
