Living life her way: Helen’s story
This World Cerebral Palsy Day, we’re celebrating Helen, a much-loved...
For Rocky Bay customer Trevor Hardwick, a great day out often involves fresh air, good company and – if he’s lucky – a few fish on the line. Trevor loves to head out to the water for a few hours of fishing – and it’s safe to say he’s hooked!
Trevor is no stranger to fishing. He’s previously spent time casting a line down by the river in Ascot, so joining Fishability on a day trip felt like a natural next step. Fishability is a not-for-profit organisation that has been creating accessible fishing opportunities for people with disabilities since 2003. Through jetty and boat-based programs on purpose-built vessels across WA, the team help people connect with a hobby they love or discover a brand-new passion for fishing and the outdoors.
We caught up with Trevor after one of his fishing pursuits, where the day included a boat trip – one of Trevor’s favourite parts of the experience.
“It’s pretty good. They’re nice people. I’m good at it!” Trevor laughed. “I loved going out on the boat. I would like to do it again.”
Fishability provided the bait, while Trevor brought along his own fishing rod, ready to put his skills to use. And put them to use he did.
“I caught a whiting, tripe and tailor. They’re pretty good flying fish,” he said proudly.
Trevor knows his stuff when it comes to fishing. He explained that some fish are quite small, so you need tiny hooks, and he’s careful about what he keeps.
“I keep the bream, but throw the little ones back in.”
Fiona Rowland from the Fishability team said that for participants, “catching a fish is the icing on the cake!”. For many, fishing is something they used to love and participate in and thought they never would again until they found Fishability.
“Our participants and their carers tell us that Fishability brings them joy and companionship. Many of our participants have attended our activities year after year and love the opportunity to go fishing in a safe, welcoming environment. Everyone is welcome at Fishability.”
Fishing doesn’t stop at the catch for Trevor -he’s also an expert when it comes to preparing fish.
“I cut the heads off and skin them. I’ll teach you! You have to take the bones out. It’s easy for me!”
And of course it’s not the thrill of catching a fish, it’s top of his list when it comes to mealtime favourites.
“I like fish and chips.”
When he’s not out on the water, Trevor keeps busy in other ways. Recently he’s been bowling, visited a motor museum, hiked at Lesmurdi Falls and enjoyed preparing a number of BBQ’s with friends. He’s also an avid bike rider and loves the freedom it gives him.
“I ride my bike. I got it fixed yesterday. I go everywhere on it.”
Rocky Bay supports customers to live the life they choose by providing opportunities that allow individuals choice and control over their day. Meaningful experiences like taking part in a fishing trip help customers build skills, make connections and enjoy what our community has to offer.
