James received a “10/10 thumbs up” from his housemates for his recent cooking skills, serving up a delicious kofta ball dish at their home.

The budding chefs choose which dishes they’d like to make for each other, and Team Leader Caryn Stewart converts them into step-by-step recipe cards, complete with visuals of the ingredients, tools and methods that allow those who cannot read to fully understand and identify what they need to do, and which ingredients to use. The cards not only break down the process but also break down barriers.

The story continues...

Caryn explained how the recipe cards maximise choice and control, providing an inclusive resource that allows customers to independently cook a meal from start to finish without anyone taking over.

“By combining clear visual elements with written instructions, the visual recipe becomes an inclusive and accessible resource for everyone,” explained Caryn. “James confidently used the visual recipe, drawing on his existing skills while developing new ones to independently follow the recipe. James shared the meal with his housemates, a proud moment indeed. Great work James!”

The mouth-watering meals that have been converted into recipe cards so far include: creamy tuscan chicken pasta; quiche lorraine; chicken and vegetable curry and sausage and capsicum pasta. Is anyone else hungry now?!

How we helped

As the housemates master these recipes, they choose new dishes. For example, one customer loved chicken parmigiana, so a recipe card was created so that he could make it himself. Tina Wynne, Senior Facilitator Active Support highlights the “shining stars of Active support”:

“The team clearly see ‘every moment has potential,’ especially when it comes to engaging in the kitchen,” said Tina. “These simple and easy to follow recipes allow not only our customers, but staff to be able to follow along. By ‘maximised choice and control’ the gents were able to choose their own recipe. This not only ensures success, but increases engagement – after all, who doesn’t want to cook a meal they love to eat!”

With the catalogue of recipes growing, the team are hoping to roll this initiative across the organisation to give all houses access. This will help enhance customer engagement, skill development and greater independence in our accommodation service.

Maybe one day they will have their own cookbook!
