Living life her way: Helen’s story
This World Cerebral Palsy Day, we’re celebrating Helen, a much-loved...
If you’re ever lucky enough to meet Sandra, you’ll quickly notice her warm, outgoing personality and her ability to make you lose all sense of time as you realise that you’ve suddenly been sat there for an hour listening to all her fascinating stories! A supported accommodation customer for the past two years, it’s fair to say that Sandra is one of Rocky Bay’s resident social butterflies, filling her days with colour, conversation and a wide range of creative pursuits, from crochet and painting to singing and cooking.
At the moment though, her main focus is crochet which, as she explains, “just takes your mind off things” and gives her a feeling of calm. While she’s also tried knitting, Sandra says crochet is her favourite because she finds it easier. She attends a weekly craft group where she continues to build her skills, enjoy time with other creative women in the group and work steadily on projects. Currently she’s working on a red blanket as part of a church project supporting aged care residents. She also likes to add a bit of extra flair to her outfits when and where she can, she recently added crocheted roses to a newly purchased jumper as she thought it looked “a little bit plain!”
Sandra’s creativity stretches well beyond crocheting. One of her other loves is painting, and she’s built up quite the collection of artwork over the years. Each piece is dear to her and that is reflected in where each creation lives. Her room is full of her artwork, and they’re also proudly on display in the rooms of the people she is close to, including her dad’s room at his aged care facility and the walls of her Supported Accommodation’s Team Leader Penny’s office. In fact, she has so many that people have asked if she might be willing to sell some of her pieces, but they’re too precious to part with. “They’re all too close to my heart,” she explains, although she has temporarily hung up the paint brush due to lack of space!
Music is another important part of Sandra’s life. She loves to sing and regularly attends the Bassendean Melody Club where members of the community have the opportunity to share songs and sing together. She’s also a member of her church’s music group and recently Sandra taught them an action song that she learnt whilst visiting Fiji in her younger days called “I Keep Falling in Love with Him”. It’s a popular Christian action and worship song that includes matching lyrics and hand movements, so that those who are unable to sing could still participate.
When she’s not crafting or singing, Sandra also enjoys cooking, swimming and spending time out in the community. The supported accommodation house has a weekly roster where each resident takes a turn making the evening meal, and when it’s her turn Sandra enjoys making vegetable tarts, quiches and soups for the whole group.
If you ask Sandra where she prefers to be, she’ll tell you that she loves being out and about. “I’d rather be out in the community than sat at home”, she says. Friendly and outgoing, she loves meeting people, having a chat and learning about their lives. “I just like to talk to them, see where they’re at and what they do to keep themselves busy,” she says. And if you do meet Sandra out and about, don’t be surprised if you find yourself staying for a chat!
