Autism Assessments

Autism diagnosis assessments are used to diagnose cases of autism in children.

Over a period of a few hours, a team of experienced clinicians, including a psychologists and either an occupational therapist or a speech pathologist conduct a series of tests and observations.

The team then discuss their observations and write a report. This report can be used to access NDIS funding and supports for your child if a diagnosis is given.

Autism diagnosis assessments are for children aged 3-17 who are showing sign of autism but have not yet had a formal diagnosis.

If you are waiting to see a paediatrician, an assessment from Rocky Bay can help you fast track the process. Simply take your completed report with you to the paediatrician appointment for confirmation. You are then able to apply for NDIS funding.

To be eligible for an assessment, you must:

• Have a referral from a GP or paediatrician
• Be aged between 3 and 17 years
• Not previously received a autism assessment
• Be available to attend the assessment in person (teletherapy is not possible)
• Pay for the assessment in full

Autism diagnosis assessments are a pay-as-you-go service.
Due to the nature of the assessment and the need to pre-book multiple clinical staff on the day of the assessment, it is important fees are paid in full prior to the assessment commencing.

Unfortunately it is not possible to use NDIS funds to pay for assessments.

You can access Medicare rebates if you have been referred by a private paediatrician or psychiatrist and your child in under 13 years of age.

Your private health insurance provider may offer rebates. Check with your provider to see if you are eligible.

The nature of the assessment you require will determine the total cost. You will be advised at the time of your pre-enrolment.

All autism diagnosis assessments are conducted at Rocky Bay’s dedicated paediatric hub, Lady Lawley Cottage in Cottesloe.
