Imagine a future where people with disability and members of the community come together at an inclusive facility that supports and nurtures all abilities.

That future is one step closer after plans for Rocky Bay’s transformational new disability, health and community facility in Belmont were unanimously approved at the May meeting of the Joint Development Assessment Panel.

The development on Rocky Bay’s Abernethy Road site will deliver a four storey, campus-style facility from which to grow our therapy, rehabilitation, skills development, training and community access programs.

However, Chief Executive Michael Tait said the plan also extends Rocky Bay to address unmet needs across the Western Australian disability landscape, with a specialist paediatric hub, inclusive early learning centre, specialist ‘all abilities’ gym and extensive community spaces being included in the approved plans.

“This is an important decision, not just for Rocky Bay but for disability services in Western Australia,” Mr Tait said.

“Our visionary project looks beyond the requirements of surviving in the current policy and funding environment, and actively seeks to deliver services at a level not-yet seen in Western Australia.  This interdisciplinary facility will provide one of the State’s most holistic and inclusive service offerings to help thousands of people with disability live a better life.”

Hames Sharley Associate Director, Andrew Tang-Smith said the design aims to set a new benchmark for accessible and inclusive design, with a strong consideration for neurodiverse users.

“Central to the masterplan is the connection between sanctuary, health and wellbeing, with an immersive ‘Building in the Park’ design that draws the natural world in at every opportunity,” Mr Tang-Smith said.

Importantly, the plans also provide the flexibility to work with the wider disability, health and community sectors with opportunities for sharing and co-locating services onsite to improve access to services for people living with disability.

As such, Rocky Bay will facilitate a strong community engagement program which will enhance the way the facility will be used to integrate within the Belmont and broader Perth and WA communities.
