It takes just a little support, determination and patience to help someone be the best they can be, to optimise their quality of life.
Joshua Rauer has been a resident of Rocky Bay’s supported accommodation since October 2017 and has since flourished, both personally and socially, with support from our Home and Community team.
Lockridge Team Leader, Kylie Heavens, said when Joshua first joined Rocky Bay he was showing challenging behaviours, became agitated due to lack of consistency and found it difficult to clearly communicate his need. This meant Joshua’s community inclusion was limited – that was until Rocky Bay stepped in to support him and help him to become more independent.
Joshua now leads a very active lifestyle and loves spending time cruising around Perth and seeing as many places as he can. With help from our support staff, he is able to enjoy what he loves most.
“Joshua now goes out daily – swimming, bowling, dinners at his favourite Kalamunda pub, library visits and weekly house grocery shopping using a credit card and signing his name,” said Kylie.
More recently, Joshua began volunteering weekly at Swan Animal Haven in Wattle Grove. He has a great love of animals and found volunteering a fantastic opportunity to not only spend time doing something he loves, but helping others in the community.
“Joshua’s visits provide an opportunity for the dogs to socialise with new people, which helps to prepare them for when they are adopted,” said Jess Sackmann from Swan Animal Haven.
“It benefits the dogs to socialise with new people and I hope that it also benefits Joshua to spend time with these lovely dogs.”
Joshua’s time at the shelter is spent getting to know the animals and their individual temperaments, with the ultimate goal being to eventually assist with walking and feeding the dogs.
“The staff have been wonderful and so welcoming of Joshua,” Kylie added.
“Swan Animal heaven has given Joshua the opportunity to contribute to his local community, experience the unconditional friendship of dogs and connect with other individuals who share a love of animals.”
