Three years ago, Alicia Waterman, Rocky Bay’s incredibly motivated customer, underwent major spinal surgery that resulted in her living with quadriplegia and a tracheostomy.
After spending three months in intensive care, the only part of her body that Alicia could move was her fingers. Desperate to relieve the extreme pain she was living with, Alicia’s parents decided to search for a hydrotherapy pool to assist with her with her movement and rehabilitation.
Since her parents approached Rocky Bay, they haven’t looked back.
Rocky Bay’s Senior Physiotherapist, Zhao Teoh, and Alicia formed a special relationship, both equally determined for Alicia to reach her goals, including being able to walk.
“No one else would take a quadriplegic in a pool with a tracheostomy,” Alicia said.
“Zhao was prepared to help me and it changed my whole entire life.”
Following an intensive two-year rehabilitation program with Zhao, Alicia proudly walked again. Not only has Alicia gained her mobility, she has also improved her fitness, resolved her chronic back pain and her speech has improved thanks to increased lung capacity.
Last year Alicia was determined to walk the last 100 metres of the HBF Run for a Reason – and succeeded. This year, Alicia is not only willing to walk 700 metres but also raise money for Rocky Bay.
