Meet the Rocky Bay team – John Astle

Mar 30, 2020

Meet John Astle, Project Officer in Rocky Bay’s Community division.

John works with mostly teenage customers who are at the end of their schooling and looking to transition to the workplace and find meaningful employment.

We had a chat with John to find out a little more about his role and how he supports our customers. Get to know John a little more with our Q&A!

What does your role at Rocky Bay involve?

Our team supports school leavers and students approaching the end of their schooling, to develop an understanding of what skills and abilities they need to gain to find and maintain meaningful employment.

With Rocky Bay’s NDIS-funded Finding and Keeping a Job program, customers are able to access our services either while still at school or on leaving. Our role is to work together with them, their family and other important people in their lives to achieve their goals.

Tell us more about your background and experience?

Prior to moving to Australia in 1991, I worked for 17 years in the banking and finance industry in the United Kingdom. From the age of 19, I worked in a variety of positions with a view to take on managerial roles.

I have worked in the disability sector for 28 years, both in hands-on support roles and various administrative and management roles.

What do you love most about your field of work?

Working with school leavers and their families. I enjoy being able to support them on their journey from school to adult services and providing a solid foundation on which to build a pathway to develop their future is very rewarding.

What do you love to do in your free time?

Spending time with my family and sport (in that order) are very dear to my heart and I enjoy being around both. I also love to spend time in my garden. Having just moved house there is a fair bit to do!

What are three things you can’t live without and why

  1. Friends – those both in Australia and overseas are important to me. I may only see my overseas friends once over a couple of years, but it’s like we have never been apart. True friendship weathers both time and distance.
  2. Football – I love my football team, Manchester City, and really enjoy following them when they have a pre-season in Australia or Asia.
  3. Chocolate and wine!
