Speech Pathology
Communication difficulties may occur as a result of issues with articulation, hearing, auditory comprehension or processing, verbal expression, reading, writing, fluency, social skills or voice. For some individuals their ability to communicate can be greatly assisted by alternative or augmentative communications systems, such as communication books or voice output devices.
A primary role of the speech pathologist at Rocky Bay is also the management of swallowing difficulties. This involves educating clients, families and staff about strategies to manage swallowing difficulties. Such strategies may include adjustments to posture, equipment, swallowing technique and the preparation and/or texture of food and fluids.
Services are provided with a focus on the needs of the individual and the family/carers, which necessitates a flexible approach. Such an approach may include:
- Assessment and diagnosis;
- Working together to set goals;
- Home/school/community visits;
- Liaison with teachers, carers, specialists;
- Individual/group therapy block or demonstration of strategies;
- Provision of information to families and others.
