Community Aids and Equipment Program (CAEP)

The Disability Services Commission is responsible for the overall funding and administration of the Community Aids and Equipment Program (CAEP).

The program aims to assist people with disabilities to stay in their own homes, by providing basic and essential equipment and home modification.

Rocky Bay, as a service provider, receives a CAEP grant each year in order to support the equipment needs of those clients registered with Therapy and Professional Services (TAPS) and Fremantle-Peel School Age Therapy Services (SATS) Program.

• Eligibility criteria apply for access to CAEP funding and these include;
• Having a permanent disability (acquired before the age of 60)
• Living at home/in the community for most of the time
• Holding either a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Carer Payment or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (not State)

CAEP provides a list of equipment that can be funded through the program. Conditions and maximum price ceiling limits apply to the provision of particular items.

A clients’ primary therapist is responsible for identifying the most appropriate equipment for them, in consultation with the Senior Therapist for that program.

Examples of equipment that may be provided include;

• A wheelchair to help with mobility within the home
• Installation of a ramp to help with mobility into the home
• Provision of communication devices
• Provision of a commode for showering or toileting

Replacement of equipment is based on clinical need and the condition of the equipment, rather than on a specific time frame.

All equipment remains the property of CAEP and when items are replaced or no longer required, they must be returned to CAEP through Rocky Bay.

A CAEP refurbishment program is in place for equipment items that are suitable for re-issue; therefore clients may not necessarily receive brand new items when issued with equipment.
