In 2003, a project officer conducted this three phased research in order to ensure that clients of Rocky Bay are able to travel in motor vehicles and feel confident that the safest possible option has been explored for them and their families.Phase One:
- Determine current practices for restraints and occupant restraints used by Rocky Bay.
- Audit all clients using Rocky Bay transport
- Develop an assessment tool for use by occupational therapists. (Checklist for therapists to assist with best practice)
- Develop reporting guidelines including pictures and recommendations
- Use assessment and report for each client using Rocky Bay Transport and forward information to each clients therapist. (Needs assessment what do clients have and what do they need to meet the standards).
- Update transport handout to be conducted by all therapists.
Phase Two:
- Reports received by therapists- act upon reports:
- Modifications to wheelchairs
- Application for funding for transport related equipment and modifications.
- Document including review dates in a similar way to Manual Handling.
- Targeted training to clients, family carers and Rocky Bay Transport individual specific
Phase Three: Ongoing
- Assessment of clients using own vehicles
- Document current practice advice/recommend/apply for funding to meet standards for private vehicle users.
- Include transport as part of manual handling protocols.
